Project: Hobbes.mitre.org - Home Sweet Home

Description: Home page at MITRE providing: detailed project information, quick search of internal and external resources, office temperature, weathercam, CNNcam, visitor locale-based weather/traffic and greeting by name, calendar, and a visual indication of whether I was in the office or not. The office graphic evolved from a personal-information management HyperCard stack developed in the mid-1980s.

 
 
Project: Intelink-J Extranet

Date: 1997

Description: Deployed bilingual (Japanese, English) system integrating assorted information sources and capabilities enabling bilateral collaboration (USFJ, JDA)

 
Project: SoftZoo Portal & ASP

Date: 2000

Description: A consumer software portal and ASP supported by an extranet, providing unique software categorization and comparison along with instant use of software on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. (The ASP and extranet components are not shown)

Project: CALL (Center for the Advancement of Language Learning) Web Site

Project: PACOM (US Pacific Command) Computer-Based Training (CBT)

Project: Web Translator

Date: 1994

Description: The first integration of machine translation with the Web. Demonstrated at the 1995 UN Criminal Justice Conference in Cairo. Based on the Globalink translation engine.

 
 
Project: OSIS Language Translator

Date: 1995

Description: An enhanced version of the Web Translator supporting URLs or text, documents with frames, and continued browsing ability (hyperlink modification). Based on the Systran translation engine. Later prototypes also included the ability to auto-detect languages and encodings, as well as support for additional languages.

 
Project: Assorted Language Tools

Description:

  • Print Utility - Generates a postscript file or GIF images (one per page) for a document translated into Chinese, Japanese, or Korean; thus ensuring proper rendering of fonts; couples with translation engine

  • Speech Synthesizer - Generates an audio file consisting of sinthesized speech for the entered text; couples with translation engine

  • Language Guesser - Uses multiple language identification technologies for better performance

  • Thai Parses & Translator - A rapid prototype showcasing what can be done with open source technologies in a very short amount of time (< 1 day)
